Need Cheap Wood?

CNC Cutting,Sheets,Timber — Tags: , , , — Booker Timber @ 9:34 am

With the recession hitting us hard, everything is becoming more and more expensive and more difficult to afford. Not only are trade prices rising on tools, but also on the raw materials. This means that if you are a tradesman or looking for material within the private sector, everything is becoming more and more expensive.

Here at Booker-Timber, we appreciate that low-cost materials are hard to come by. That is why we work on the principle of saving costs. Our CNC routing and cutting technology ensures that minimal amounts of wood are lost to off cuts, effectively giving us more material to work with. All of our materials are bought from quality assured businesses, therefore giving you, our customer, a quality and cost effective product.

Cut to size MDF or chipboards are perfect for both the trade and private industries. A versatile material, strong and easy to use, MDF sheets can be used in many ways. They are perfect for most DIY jobs around the house, for instance using cut to size MDF when insulating up in the rafters.

Many plywood like materials can also be very handy for creating cheap shelving or cupboard solutions. Due to their strong and durable nature, these types of boards are best used in places like the utility room, or the garage. However, if you are confident at getting a quality finish on the product, you can easily make a good looking piece of furniture out of MDF. After all, most flat-pack furniture is some type of man-made wood.

Why Use CNC?

CNC Cutting,Sheets — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 9:31 am

CNC is a new technology that has arrived on the scene, allowing us here at Booker Timber to provide quality in sheet cutting. CNC cutting and routing techniques combine power and amazing accuracy to provide quality sheet cutting. With this power and accuracy, we are able to cut exact shapes with absolute precision. CNC stands for computer numerically controlled, basically meaning that the accuracy comes from a high powered computer program that is linked to a powerful cutting device.

As individual shapes can be cut, this allows us here at Booker Timber to cut to size chipboard, MDF, and plastics to any shape the customer desires. So whether you are looking for large scale items for the trade sector, or want shelves or grilles for example, we can cut them for you.

To do this we use very large machines. Due to the huge nature and size of our cutting machines, we are able to cut up to several inches thick of plastics or woods. We can also cut up to 6 metres in length and up to 3.8 metres in width.

The advantages to CNC cutting are huge. Arguably the biggest advantage to this CNC cutting is accuracy. Due to the precision of our equipment, we can cut up to 0.1millimetre accuracy. This accuracy is impressive, and something which is very difficult to match through conventional ways of cutting. The second biggest advantage is cost. CNC enables us to keep our costs down as we make sure to keep off cuts to a low. You only pay for what you buy.

Information on MDF

Sheets,Timber — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 9:24 am

MDF has been in mass production now since the 1980’s. It is used predominantly in the DIY scene, as it has many advantages over natural wood. The biggest of these advantages being price. As MDF is man-made, there is no waiting for the tree to grow, or process of drying the timber, which means that costs are kept low. MDF is used mainly as a cheap substitute for wood, but with the right cut and finish, can have a good effect.

MDF, also known as Medium Density Fibreboard is an engineered wood product made by breaking down either hardwood or softwood residuals, mixing them with wax and resin to produce a versatile board material. MDF has many advantages and disadvantages due to its manmade nature.

Home MDF cutting can be frustrating. The fibrous nature of MDF means that it can be susceptible to splitting when having a generic saw taken to it. Also, MDF does not react well with screws or nails, so advice is generally given to use strong wood glues or araldite for fixing purposes. MDF sheets are a very versatile material however, and any workman or keen DIYer should have experience with this material.

MDF is generally used in similar ways that old plywood and other man made wood products are used. However MDF tends to be stronger, and as it is denser, it can tend to be much more durable. These properties make it the perfect substance for using at home or in the commercial sector.

Wood Veneers, The Ideal Material For Domestic Products

Sheets,Veneers — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 9:03 am

Although much of the stock at Booker Timber is raw materials, we don’t just shape, cut, and sell the pure wood. As a timber merchant, we recognise the need to provide wood that has been treated/processed, and is ready to use.

Take a look around our website, and you’ll come across our wide range of wood veneers. Given that the process of veneering involves gluing thin slices of wood on to mdf sheets, it may not seem that striking. Choose the right veneer however, add a touch of stain or varnish, and the finished result can be striking.

Because veneers use thin layers of wood, it means that we at Booker Timber, and our woodwork customers, have access not just to the common species, but to the rarer types of wood as well. We sell double sided cut to size mdf veneers in common species, while rarer, more expensive woods are used as one-sided veneers. All the veneers are available in two different size sheets, and in a variety of thicknesses, so you can easily find a veneer to suit your door, cabinet top, or flooring project.

Here at Booker Timber, our stock includes steamed beech, pine, oak, am maple, sycamore, and chestnut. We also have birch, ash, cherry, am black walnut, and q/c sapele. Although we have a large range of wood veneers in stock, all sourced from sustainable forests, we also offer a bespoke service, and will try and source your chosen species of wood veneer.

The Advantages Of CNC Cutting

CNC Cutting,Sheets,Timber — Tags: , , — Booker Timber @ 9:48 am

Although the construction industry has all kinds of technology, skills, and equipment at its disposal, when it comes to wood, you sometimes need to employ the services of a good timber supplier. Timber suppliers can not only supply raw materials, but also use cnc cutting machines, to provide you with the right size, and finish of product.

Using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) is almost like printing out some work on a computer, except instead of ink and paper, we’re using a cutting tool and wood. The benefits of this are threefold. We can deal with large sheets of wood, and cut in a way that reduces wastage and saves you money. Our work also involves either cut to size mdf or other wood, or cutting and shaping to the design you supply, with all the settings sent from computer to the cutting machine.

This can be ideal for domestic products, such as decorative furniture and wall panelling. It’s an accurate and high speed way of routing and cutting that can be used for not only wood, but plastic and mdf as well.

Booker Timber deal with large and small orders, for a variety of different industries, from aerospace to packaging. Along with precise cutting services, we can also offer timber supplies, such as real wood veneers, plywood sheets, and self-assembly raised bed kits, for gardens and nurseries. To find out more about CNC cutting, and what the technology can do, visit us online, or call us for quotations and advice.

The Benefits of Raised Beds

We are a leading timber merchant that can provide sheet cutting services, CNC routing and assembled or kit form raised beds.

Do you want vegetables free from pesticides? Here at Booker Timber we can offer raised beds which have been quality treated by tannalisation – a wood preservative that can preserve wood or timber for numerous years. Therefore, our premium Scandinavian timber is extremely durable so it will not be susceptible to fungus or insects, and it can also fight against the elements. The tannalisation will also give the timber an aesthetically pleasing green colour which blends in with a garden area.

Is the Treatment Safe for Children?

You can rest assured that when you buy our raised beds they will perform effectively and will not cause any harm to your children or animals, so they are ideal for city gardens, country gardens and roof top gardens. Our raised beds are also ideal for disabled or elderly people as they are extremely easy to use.

Does the Wood Have to be Treated?

Many people have often opted to purchase raised beds without tannalisation due to the sheer strength and durability of our timber. Also, untreated raised beds can also be painted or varnished, so you can customise your raised bed to complement your garden area.

Raised beds ultimately allow you to enjoy growing your own food and it can become a valuable pass time. Using raised beds in gardening can also help you teach children about the sources of vegetables and help them to understand the importance of high quality ingredients.

If you are interested in our raised beds from us here at Booker Timber, we can provide you with kit form or assembled beds.

If you would like to know more about our raised beds or CNC cutting services, you should contact us today and speak to a friendly and helpful member of staff.

The Value of Chipboard

CNC Cutting — Tags: , , , — Booker Timber @ 11:53 am

Chipboard is one of those materials that gets a bad name for being weaker than solid timber, but what most people miss is just how revolutionary the idea is. When used for the right applications, it’s just perfect and lasts well, and what’s more, the manufacture of chipboard uses up scraps and cuttings that would otherwise be thrown out. It reduces waste and in these environmentally conscious times surely we should give it a round of applause for that reason alone.

It’s true that a cut to size chipboard section may not be as strong as a single solid plank of hardwood but then, it often doesn’t have to be. The shelving in most kitchen cupboards doesn’t need to support a huge weight and in many cases Melamine Faced Chipboard (MFC) does the job perfectly well.

The melamine is a plastic coating that seals out moisture. This is quite important as the inner material can weaken when it gets damp, but there are other advantages. The smooth, waterproof melamine surface wipes clean, unlike raw timber, and it’s quite resistant to stains. MFC is cheap and easy to produce in a rainbow of different colours.

It isn’t suitable for every project but no single material is ideal for everything. In the right place it is an eco friendly, low cost option that performs well. We can provide chipboard or MFC precision shaped with computerised CNC cutting tools. If you’ve got a task and think chipboard is the way forward, we can create just what you want.
